News and Tips
Cuttings
If you have had a little heat in the greenhouse during the winter you may
have new growth allowing you to start taking cuttings. Cutting size no
more than about 1 to 2 inches.
Compost for taking cuttings
Use peat or similar but add at least 20/25% perlite or similar to give a
free draining mix with plenty air within it.
Saturate the compost with boiling water the day before using to sterilise it.
Protect from low temperatures
Continue to protect from very cold nights especially if you have new growth.
Potting on
Select plants to be potted on a week or so before you do it and shape the plant.
This allows the stem ends to seal before disturbing the plant which will be under stress.
Compost for potting on
Use peat or similar with 15/20% perlite or vermiculite plus fertilizer.
Sieve to increase air content and mix sufficient to last 2 or 3 weeks of potting on.
Dahlia Tubers
Put into pots or trays and cover just below the crown of the tuber. When new growth is about two inches tall
take cuttings or leave a little longer and divide the tuber for extra plants.
Temperatue 60 to 65deg F.
Rose Pruning
Now is the time to prune. Choose an outward pointing bud and cut 3 to 6 cm above the bud sloping away from it
at an angle of 45 degrees. Reduce the plant to approximately half its original size'
